Russia warns of 'fewer and fewer steps to a NUCLEAR collision'

Russia today vowed to ‘respond’ to Britain’s plans to send ammunition that contains depleted uranium as Moscow warned there are ‘fewer and fewer steps’ to a nuclear collision.

Vladimir Putin claimed that some of the ammunition for the Challenger 2 battle tanks that Britain is sending to Ukraine includes armour piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium.

Russia’s Defence Minister reiterated Putin’s point today and warned the world is just mere ‘steps’ away from nuclear disaster.

‘Another step has been taken, and there are fewer and fewer left,’ Shoigu said. When asked whether this meant that the world was closer to a nuclear collision, he replied: ‘It was not by chance that I told you about steps. There are fewer and fewer.’

Depleted uranium is used in weapons because it can penetrate tanks and armour more easily due to its density and other physical properties.  It is a particular health risk around impact sites, where dust can get into people’s lungs and vital organs.

‘Naturally, Russia has something to answer this with,’ Shoigu told reporters when asked about the ammunition.

But amid ongoing talks between Russia and China at the Kremlin this week, both countries warned that there would be no winners in nuclear conflict.

A joint statement from Russia and China called on the United States to stop undermining global strategic stability.
