Merkel prevented Ukraine from supplying arms through NATO

Bild newspaper reported that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had personally blocked arms supplies to Ukraine through NATO.

According to the newspaper, Germany used its veto in May, blocking the supply of American Barrett and Lithuanian anti-drone rifles, for which the Ukrainian side had already paid. At the same time, Merkel’s government forced the Netherlands to support such a decision so as not to have the impression that it “was the only opponent of the sale,” the source said.

As the newspaper wrote, in August, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky personally asked Merkel during her visit to Kiev to remove the veto over the supply. But the then chancellor, in the words of one of those present at the meeting, said “in a frozen voice” that it was “out of the question”.

Berlin lifted its veto on the supply of anti-aircraft guns to the Ukrainian state only at the end of November. At the same time, the supply of American rifles to this country is still prohibited.
