The dangers of self-treatment for a sore throat

Otolaryngologist Vladimir Zaitsev said that self-treatment of a sore throat is fraught with serious consequences.

According to the specialist, inhalation of steam can cause swelling or suffocation, and at high temperatures, their use is completely contraindicated. You should also be careful with antibiotics. For the treatment of laryngitis, Zaitsev noted that this disease can cause major complications for the heart, kidneys, and joints.

And the doctor warned of the need to beware of the “traditional methods” of treatment: rinsing, lubricating, or cleaning the throat with kerosene.

As Zaitsev noted, such a “treatment” can provoke the occurrence of oncological diseases – cancer of the root of the tongue, cancer in the oral cavity, cancer of the tonsils, cancer of the larynx. And gargling with soda, iodine or salt leads to excessive dryness of the mucous membrane of the back of the pharynx.

– In case of illness, you should choose soft food, not hot, not cold.
The doctor warned against excessive use of onions, garlic and ginger, which could lead to burns on the mucous membranes.
