The modernization of the Russian nuclear submarine “Chelyabinsk” to become a carrier “Zircon”

 

The Russian nuclear submarine “Chelyabinsk” will be converted into a cruise missile carrier “Zircon” and “Onyx”.

A source in the shipbuilding industry said that work is scheduled to modernize the submarine at the Far East Factory “Wasul” in 2022. He stated that the submarine will be equipped with global launchers for launching Onyx and Zircon missiles.

As the source indicated, as a result, the combat power of “Chelyabinsk” will increase “several times”.

This submarine was laid down in 1987 under Project 949A and launched in 1990. It is in the Pacific Fleet.

Earlier, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) announced that it is ready to begin arming the warships of the Russian Navy with hypersonic Zircon missiles.
