Victims of sexual harassment by US gymnastics team doctor receive $380 million in compensation

The US Gymnastics Association has reached an agreement with the country’s Olympic and Paralympic committees over compensation for victims of harassment by former US gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, The Associated Press reported.

More than 500 people have been recognized as victims of Nassar’s actions. The total amount of payments will be $380 million, although the victims initially claimed $425 million in a class action.

Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles, Ellie Raisman, and McKayla Maroney said the US National Committee has long ignored the accusations against Nassar. According to the athletes, officials did not try to prevent the crimes committed by the former doctor of the national gymnastics team. It is noteworthy that senior officials who worked in the National Institution at that time still occupy important positions.

Nassar admitted to committing sexual acts against 11 athletes. In 2017, the former doctor was sentenced to 60 years in prison for possession of child pornography, and in January 2018 a second sentence was added – 175 years for sexual assault of gymnasts.
