Chinese scientists invent gel against post operative scars

Scientists have created a gel to prevent the formation of scars.
An article about this was published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

About 90 percent of patients who have open abdominal or pelvic surgery develop postoperative scarring, or scar tissue.
If scar tissue forms on internal organs, depending on the location, it can cause chronic pain, intestinal obstruction, or sometimes death.

It is possible that scientists from the Southern Chinese Medical University, led by Yaobing Wu, have invented a remedy for this problem – an injectable hydrogel that can seal wounds without sticking to tissues and prevents adhesions.

The developed hydrogel, called HAD, shows adhesion on one side only. It is injected into the wound area, after which it is photographed with ultraviolet radiation from the side that does not touch the wound.

In operations on rats and rabbits, HAD has been shown to work well, prevent adhesion formation and reduce animal mortality.
