Greece imposes fines for unvaccinated people

From January 16, Greek authorities will begin to fine people over the age of 60 who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus. Unvaccinated elderly citizens will be fined €100 per month, and in January the amount will be €60.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis explained this measure due to the increase in the number of infected people and the emergence of a new strain of the Corona virus “Omicron”. According to him, the majority of those hospitalized and those who died due to coronavirus in the country are citizens over the age of 60.

“My decision means protection, not punishment,” the prime minister said.
“This is not a punishment. I would say this is the price of health. It is a precautionary incentive, an incentive for life, but I think it is also an act of justice for a much greater number of those who have been vaccinated.”

Greek government spokesman Yiannis Economou said the state would not delay enforcing the fine.
