The Economist: The world is one step away from a military catastrophe

The Economist opened its editorial with an article that the United States and China are on one step away from a military catastrophe.

The authors of the article cite an incident in April 2001, when an American EP-3 reconnaissance plane collided with a J-8II fighter of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in the South China Sea. The American plane was then badly damaged and landed without permission on Hainan Island, where Chinese security forces arrested and interrogated 24 crew members.

After two decades, Congress and the media are unlikely to allow the United States to make concessions with China, the article says.
According to the authors of the article, Beijing is also not ready to make concessions in the event of a serious accident.

According to crisis management expert Zhang Tuoshen, there are fundamental differences between China and the United States on how to avoid air accidents.
