State of emergency imposed due to gas shortage in Moldova

Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilica said the government is studying the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in the country due to the threat to cut off gas supplies.

“This will be necessary so that the government can take decisions quickly and respond to the situation,” the prime minister explained.

According to her, the authorities are studying various options for action and everything will depend on whether Moldovagaz will be able to repay its debts to Gazprom on time.

On January 12, Moldovagaz informed the Moldovan government of financial difficulties and a possible suspension of gas supplies by Gazprom due to the non-fulfillment of the financial obligations by the Moldovan side.

It is noteworthy that the company faced financial difficulties due to inconsistent tariffs with the rise in imported gas prices in January. The republic’s authorities recommended that state institutions reduce gas consumption.
