Attack on a French military base in Mali kills a soldier and injures 9

A soldier from the 54th Artillery Regiment was killed “as a result of a mortar attack on a French military base in Gao” in the southeast of the country on January 22. Nine French soldiers were wounded, according to the Elysee Palace press service.

France has been carrying out Operation Barkhane since 2014 to fight Islamist groups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad. This was a continuation of the French operation “Serval” that was carried out from 2013 to 2014 in Mali.
