Biden nominates Ketanji Brown-Jackson for US Supreme Court

US President Joe Biden has nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first African-American woman to be a US Supreme Court justice.

Jackson, who if confirmed would be the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court, will replace outgoing Justice Stephen Breyer.

“I believe it is time for us to have a court that reflects all the talent and all the greatness of our nation,” US President Biden said, explaining his decision to nominate Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Brown Jackson’s nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate. Currently, Democratic representatives occupy 50 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and the remaining 50 seats are Republicans. In the event that the votes of the Senators are equally divided, the 101st vote is given to the Vice President of State.
