Philippines revives its nuclear program

The Philippines has announced that it has begun developing a nuclear power program for inclusion in its energy mix. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte signed a decree approving the program on February 28, but the decision was not announced until March 3.

The Philippines suffers from frequent power cuts and fees that are too high for people’s income levels.

The executive order states that “the national government is committed to including nuclear energy in the energy mix for power generation.” The country views nuclear energy as a viable alternative primary source along with alternative energy sources to address the expected decline in coal-burned power plants.”

Today, coal is the main source of electricity in the Philippines, accounting for more than 50% of the market. By 2040, the country will need an additional 68 gigawatts of power – the authorities see salvation in corn.

Duterte has ordered consideration of reopening the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, the Philippines’ first and only power plant built in 1986.

The plant was never used and was closed for safety reasons after the nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in April 1986.
