Scientists: N95 Doesn’t Protect Against COVID-19 Better Than Medical Masks

French researchers have found that N95 respirators do not protect against the coronavirus better than medical masks.

The researchers conducted a survey between two groups of health workers. One of them consisted of people with confirmed coronavirus, the second – without.

Participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire about the use of personal protective equipment at work. The questions covered the 10 days prior to the onset of COVID-19 symptoms or inclusion in the control group of healthy responders.

As a result of analyzing the responses received, the scientists found that the N95 respirator does not surpass surgical masks in terms of virus protection.

“Now in the United States they believe that the mask prevents the spread of infection from a sick person, and only the N95 respirator can protect a healthy person from the virus. However, recent studies have shown that the three-layer surgical mask is not inferior to respirator masks in terms of protection. Can To be worn by healthy and injured persons.”

The initial version of the scientists’ work has been published on the MedRxiv platform.
