Medical warning, two drinks cause loss of kidney function

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem worldwide, affecting 10% of the world’s adults and more than 20% of those over 60 years of age.

This is a multifactorial disease, in people with renal failure, the quality of life is reduced, especially in the elderly who are overweight and obese.

A study by the CIBEROBN group led by Jordi Salas and Andrés Diaz of the University of Rovira y Virgili (URV) within the PREDIMED-Plus project found an association between coffee and tea consumption and changes in glomerular filtration rate. This indicator is a sign of healthy kidneys. Scientists examined the history and habits of 5,851 older adults who were overweight or obese.

Many nutritional components play an important role in maintaining kidney function and preventing and slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease.

Coffee and tea, two caffeinated beverages, are consumed all over the world.

Coffee seeds are high in polyphenols (with antioxidant properties), caffeine, vitamins, minerals and bioactive phytochemicals with potential health benefits. But research on coffee and tea consumption and kidney function has always been controversial.

The authors found that coffee and tea consumption was associated with a lower glomerular filtration rate at a one-year follow-up.

It has been observed that people who drink more than 2 cups of coffee per day (50ml of caffeine per cup) have a deterioration in GFR more than those who drink coffee occasionally (less than 1 cup per day) or those who don’t.

The researchers concluded that consuming more than two cups of coffee per day was associated with a 19% increased risk of rapidly losing kidney function. Likewise, caffeinated tea can also harm the kidneys.
