US State Department advises its citizens to write a will before traveling to Ukraine

The US State Department has advised Americans who are planning a trip to Ukraine despite the invitation not to visit that country to take DNA samples, write a will, as well as discuss potential child custody issues with loved ones.

“Citizens of the United States in Ukraine must depart immediately if it is safe to do so, using any commercial or other private ground transportation,” the State Department said in a statement.
“Don’t go to Ukraine because of the armed conflict and the coronavirus.”

The statement notes that those who wish to travel to Ukraine, despite being recommended to refrain from doing so, should take a number of steps, including issuing a will, discussing plans with loved ones for child custody, pet care, and handling of property and assets. Transfer of important documents and personal data to relatives.

Thus, citizens are invited to “take DNA samples at the medical institution” where the service is provided to them, in case the “family needs access to it”.

In addition, Americans traveling to Ukraine are advised to develop their own security plan or consult with a relevant organization.
