Hunger riots erupt in South Sudan

Violence has escalated in South Sudan amid declining food availability, and incidents involving violence against people distributing aid are becoming more frequent in the country.

According to the Guardian, the Norwegian Refugee Council reported that one of their food stores was ransacked four times in a row in February. Furthermore, the publication identified the killing of two humanitarian workers.

“This could include looting relief supplies or raiding another village to get livestock,” said researcher Abraham Deng Akwe.

The United Nations reports that up to 70% of the country’s population may face difficulties in the upcoming dry season.
