UN warns of global famine-

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that rising food, fertilizer and energy prices as a result of the situation in Ukraine could cause a global food crisis.

“The effects are already being felt around the world with rising food, energy and fertilizer prices,” the Secretary-General said. “This threatens to turn into a global famine.”

Guterres also called for an end to hostilities and a chance for peace.

Earlier, the Guardian newspaper published an article in which it predicted a global famine due to the protracted conflict in Ukraine.

A rise in food prices was observed even before the worsening situation in Ukraine. In particular, the problems were caused by the climate crisis, as well as the coronavirus pandemic.

Because of the Ukrainian crisis, food has become more expensive all over the world, which can be compared with the case of the global financial crisis of 2008.

Now, the risk of disrupting the sowing season in Ukraine and a temporary ban on the export of Russian grain has been added to the factors already in place.
