EU prepares to ban Russian gas imports

German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said that amid the worsening situation in Ukraine, the European Union is preparing to discuss a ban on the import of Russian natural gas.

She indicated that the European Union will exchange views on tightening sanctions against Russia. In her view, Russian energy supplies will become part of the sanctions discussions.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz rejected the idea of an immediate ban on energy resources from Russia. He warned of the adverse impact of sanctions on European Union countries.

European Commission spokesman Tim McVeigh also indicated that the European Commission will study the issue of long-term gas contracts with Russia, but it will not be easy to eliminate the EU’s dependence on fuel from Russia.

According to the Vice-President of the European Commission, Maros Sivkovic, in order to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian gas by at least two-thirds, it will be necessary to obtain 50-60 billion cubic meters of gas from other sources and “here, of course, difficult decisions will have to be made. “
