Hungary announces plans to pay for Russian gas in rubles

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szyjjarto said during a break at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg that Budapest is ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles, and this would not be a violation of EU sanctions against Russia.

“With regard to payment in rubles, we have a solution that allows us not to violate any sanctions, but at the same time guarantee gas supplies to Hungary,” Szijjarto said.

At the same time, the G7 countries decided to invite domestic companies not to accept ruble bills for Russian gas supplies.

The agreement was reached at an emergency meeting of the energy ministers of the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Subsequently, the European Union also joined this decision.

On April 1, Russia’s Gazprom began sending official letters to customers about the new procedure for paying for gas in rubles.
