World figure skating champion dies

Figure skater Irina Vorobyeva has died at the age of 64, according to the website of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR).

Later, Vorobyeva’s daughter Alice reported that her mother had died of injuries sustained as a result of a fall.

In 1976, Vorobyeva, together with Alexander Vlasov, won the USSR championship in Volgograd for the first time. In the same year, the couple took 4th place at the Innsbruck Olympics.

Together with Igor Lisovsky, Vorobyova became the world and European champion (1981). They twice won silver (1977, 1979) and bronze (1976, 1982) medals at the European Championships.

After completing her sports career, Vorobyova was engaged in coaching in the United States.
