Le Pen vows to take France out of NATO but stay in the European Union

French presidential candidate and leader of the far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, promised that if France wins, she will leave the NATO leadership, but will remain in the European Union.

“If I am elected president, I will withdraw from the NATO Joint Command, but I will not give up Article 5 on mutual protection among NATO members,” said the presidential candidate.

It stressed that it will not transfer the French forces either to the unified command of the coalition or to the conduct of the future European command. According to her, France will not be subject to American protection.

Commenting on the possibility of France leaving the European Union if elected, Le Pen said that was not her goal, but that she wanted “this European structure to develop”.

Earlier, her main rival, current head of state Emmanuel Macron, said that Le Pen has a secret plan to withdraw the country from the European Union and create a “right-wing alliance” with Poland and Hungary. The French electorate is too pro-European to accept the so-called frexit [Brexit-style], so Le Pen could attack the bloc from within after allying with populist governments.
