India builds its first aircraft carrier

Indian shipyard Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has announced the completion of India’s first aircraft carrier.

Currently, the Indian Navy has only one aircraft carrier in service – the former Soviet aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Gorshkov, called the Vikramaditya.

According to the director of the arsenal, the sea trials of the plant were supposed to be completed before the end of April, but they were postponed for a month. Fleet trials are scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2022.

After the Indian Navy’s relocation, the ship will be called INS Vikrant (“Brave”). It is expected to take place on the country’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 15.

India’s first aircraft carrier has a weight of 39 tons, and will carry 26 MiG-29K fighters, 10 Ka-28 and Ka-31 helicopters, as well as HAL Dhruv and Westland Sea King.

A launch pad, a three-cable blocker, an optical landing system and two lifts were installed on the deck. In contrast to the aircraft-carrying cruiser armed with powerful anti-ship missiles, the Indian aircraft carrier will have only anti-aircraft guns and Barak-8 anti-aircraft missiles, and all other functions will be performed by aircraft and escort ships.
