Discover the tomb of the keeper of the secrets of the pharaohs –

The tomb of the person responsible for working with secret documents was discovered in the office of the early pharaohs of the Sixth Dynasty (circa 2300 BC) at Saqqara by an expedition of the Polish Center for Mediterranean Archeology at the University of Warsaw.

Excavations were carried out to the west of the previous important discovery site of the same excursion – the tomb of Shati Mervnepf, who, by his position, occupied the second place in ancient Egypt, being the right-hand man of the pharaoh.

In the fall of 2021, the facade of another tomb structure was excavated in the dry trench surrounding the Djoser Step Pyramids complex. It is decorated with inscriptions depicting the owner of the tomb.

Expedition leader Kamil Korashkevich from the School of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw explains. “Vladika bore the name Mehtetiu and was, among other things, an official with access to the secret documents of the pharaohs, an inspector of royal property and a priest for funeral cults during the reign of Pharaoh Titi,” “this means that he probably lived during the reign of the first three princes of the Sixth Dynasty – Titi” Oscar and Pepe I.”

According to the discoverers, Mkhitcho’s high social status allowed him to hire skilled craftsmen for the construction of the tomb, because the inscriptions on the facade highlight the exceptional skill of their creators, and the elegance of the lines and the accuracy of the casts compete with the best inscriptions of other dignitaries.

But the rock on which all this was carved is very fragile and prone to erosion, so the immediate intervention of restorers was required.

In addition, the decoration of the tomb was not completed everywhere, since Mkhitcho himself died and was buried before the work was completed.

The graphics depict the sacrificial administration – cows, oryx, and mountain goats.
