US Navy allocates $500 million to build military installations on Guam

The US Navy awarded contracts worth $250 million to companies in May to build the new Marine Corps base, Camp Place, on Guam, and another $236 million will be allocated to work on other bases on the island, according to the island’s website.

“The current program makes Guam a strategic hub that will allow Marines based in Japan and Hawaii to move through Australia and maintain a forward presence in the Indo-Pacific,” Stars and Stripes quoted base spokesman Captain Anthony Ramos as saying.

Camp Place is the first new US Marine Corps base since 1952. It is expected to house 5,000 personnel from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, which is due to arrive over the next five years from Okinawa.

Camp Plus is also slated to host the headquarters of the 4th Marine Battalion, 4th Combat Support Battalion, and 3rd Marines Logistics Group.

According to Stars and Stripes, the total amount spent on building Camp Blas since October 2020 has been about $1.75 billion.
