US Army shoots down artillery shells using lasers

The US Army has tested a 50-kilowatt Raytheon laser combat unit that shoots down several 60mm artillery shells in flight.

The laser system was tested at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico during the Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Defense Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) program, which is developing directed energy weapons.

This weapon should become part of a promising US short-range air defense system.

It is noteworthy that the laser system is designed to protect the ground forces from drones and aircraft.

The US Army should receive the first four such facilities in 2022.
