Turkey refuses to change its position on Sweden and Finland membership in NATO

Deputy Chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party, Numan Kurtulms, said that Turkey will not change its position on the issue of Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO.

“Turkey will not back down from its position, we are at the point of no return and there is no way to back down,” Kurtulmus said.

According to him, Ankara has paid a heavy price to fight terrorism, so security issues are fundamental to his country. He stressed that Sweden’s support for terrorist organizations, in particular the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, is “visible on the face.”

The deputy head of the ruling party also added that Turkey’s position on security issues should not only be taken into account, but also guarantees should be given to it.

The day before, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he intended to hold a series of phone conversations with world leaders.

“We will continue our ‘phone diplomacy’ with NATO members, but the position on the membership of Sweden and Finland is clear,” Erdogan said.

At the same time, the Turkish president indicated that, in addition to the heads of state, he will speak with the Secretary-General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg.
