US President Joe Biden has declared his willingness to defend Taiwan militarily, if necessary.
He answered a reporter’s question at a press conference after talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida: “Yes, this is a commitment we have taken.”
Biden made it clear that the United States agrees with the one-China policy, but the idea of forcibly changing the island’s status is completely inappropriate.
Earlier, the Chinese authorities accused the United States of not complying with the “one China” principle.
Prior to this, the State Department stated that the United States opposes Taiwan independence.
The question of Taiwan has remained open since 1949, when the Communist People’s Republic of China was proclaimed, and part of the ruling Kuomintang Party established power in Taiwan.
Beijing insists on the “one China principle”, according to which it is impossible to recognize both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan.
