According to Erdogan, the aim of the operation is to create a 30-kilometer safe zone along the Turkish-Syrian border.

“In the near future, we will take new steps regarding the unfinished parts of the project we started in the 30-kilometer safe zone that we have established along our southern border,” Erdogan said at a cabinet meeting.

According to the agency, the invasion could target areas controlled by the US-backed Kurdish militia.

Ankara sent troops to Syria in 2016 and 2019. In response, the United States imposed sanctions on its NATO ally, including restrictions on the sale of military equipment.

Now Turkish forces control parts of the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Raqqa, Hasaka and Idlib.

Earlier, Erdogan said that Ankara had not received the necessary support from NATO countries on the issue of combating terrorism.

According to him, Ankara expects the alliance to take certain steps to address concerns about the organization’s expansion and will not make “useless statements”.

In addition, he stressed that he “cannot turn a blind eye” to the sanctions imposed by Sweden on Turkey after the start of the military operation in Syria in 2019, and also said that Sweden should stop “political, financial and military support for terrorist organizations”.
