Mattel launches Barbie doll honoring transgender activist actress Laverne Cox
Mattel has announced a new Barbie doll made in honor of transgender actress and activist Laverne Cox.
“I can’t believe it,” Cox said. “I love her clothes. Transgender people can see her and maybe buy and play with her. They learn Mattel created the first transgender Barbie.”
As the heroine of the popular Netflix series Inventing Anna added, the new Barbie, in her opinion, is much more than a toy.
“In this world where transgender children are being abused, there is hope and opportunity for them to be themselves,” Cox said.
“I wanted her to wear multiple outfits, but it wasn’t cost-effective. A doll has to be affordable. So I thought, ‘What if she had one outfit that she could take off and transform into multiple outfits?'” That’s what we developed and created,”
