Finland opposes Ukraine’s entry into the European Union

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that Helsinki does not see it possible to make any exception for Ukraine within the framework of the country’s integration into the European Union.

After her visit to Kyiv, which took place on May 26, the head of the Finnish government separately indicated that the state as a whole supports the granting of the Ukrainian side the status of an EU candidate.

Marin explained: I don’t see how we can make an exception in the sense that the country has to meet certain criteria. I am open to conferring Ukrainian candidate status, but the fact that the country has obtained it does not mean that it will become a member of the European Union tomorrow.”

From the point of view of the Prime Minister of Finland, it is important for Ukraine to give it hope regarding European integration, but there is no talk of accepting any special conditions or offering its shortest path to the EU.
