EU plans to carry out a naval mission to export grain from Ukraine

The European Union is considering launching a naval mission to escort cargo ships carrying grain from Ukraine.

It is planned, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, that the grain will be exported from Odessa via the Black Sea. The topic is expected to be discussed at the EU summit in Brussels on May 30-31.

According to the newspaper, the EU is confident in the need for the rapid export from Ukraine of a large amount of corn, barley, and, above all, wheat.

The newspaper states that the passage of European ships to the port of Odessa is regulated by the Montreux Convention. Turkey monitors the implementation of its materials. A source in El Pais believes that the Turkish side will give permission for the passage of EU ships, because this is a humanitarian operation.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karen-Jean-Pierre said that the United States is not considering lifting sanctions against Russia in exchange for its help in exporting grain from Ukraine.
