Latvia calls for legalization of same-sex marriage

Latvia calls for legalization of same-sex marriage…

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgar Rinkevix, called for the adoption by the Chamber of Deputies of a bill on civil association, which provides for the possibility of registering same-sex relationships.

“If we see Latvia as a European country, it is time to adopt such a law,” the minister was quoted as saying by Press.lv. Rinkevich hopes Parliament will adopt the new rules on June 2.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that there are many ideological concerns about the aforementioned bill, although in his opinion it is related to the implementation of the decision of the Constitutional Court for various types of families and partnerships.

Rinkevich added that it is not only about organizing a same-sex partnership, but also a partnership between two other people.

There is a split over the different positions on the bill even in the ruling coalition – politicians from the National Assembly “All for Latvia!” – “For Home and Freedom / DNNL”.

The bill allows two adults who are unrelated and in an ordinary marriage to register their civil relationship with a notary public.

Currently, same-sex marriage is prohibited in Latvia, whether in the form of partnerships or marriages. The country’s constitution expressly prohibits the latter.

Earlier, the European Court ordered that the rights of same-sex parents be recognized in all EU countries in order to ensure the free movement of children in the countries to which they belong.
