WHO: More than 1,700 people have died in Spain and Portugal due to the heat

The head of the European office of the World Health Organization, Hans Kluge, said that the heat wave in Portugal and Spain led to the death of at least 1,700 people.

“Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of extreme heat during long heat waves, during which wildfires often start. This year, we have already seen more than 1,700 unnecessary deaths during the current heat wave in Spain and Portugal alone,” As the organization’s website says.

Kluge also expressed concern that the bushfires had already reached the north, all the way to Scandinavia, and in London the fire destroyed 41 homes.

Earlier it was reported that the heat in Denmark broke the July temperature record, set for 81 years.
