WHO chief declares monkeypox a global emergency

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared at a press briefing that the outbreak of monkeypox is an international public health emergency.

According to him, taking into account a number of factors, the decision was made to “declare the outbreak of monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern”.

Earlier, new symptoms of monkeypox, including mouth sores and muscle aches, were reported by an international group of doctors.

Due to frequent lesions of the genitals and non-specific rashes, smallpox can be confused with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases, they warn – patients with these symptoms should see a doctor as soon as possible, and a specialist should check whether the patient has monkeypox.

Doctors analyzed 528 cases of monkeypox in 16 countries. The most common symptom, which was previously known, was a rash – it was present in 95% of those infected in the genital and anal area, on the trunk, arms, legs, face, palms and feet.
