Somalia is on the brink of a massive famine

The Economist writes that drought and food crisis may soon cause massive famine in Somalia.

It is noted that at present the country imports about 80% of its food, while about 7 million people (more than 40% of the population) are constantly looking for food. In addition, a number of countries and organizations have suspended or cut donor payments that until recently helped keep the Somali economy afloat.

Somalia’s political dysfunction and poverty bear much of the blame for the crisis. But the responsibility also lies outside the country. Given that Somalia emits slightly more carbon dioxide than Andorra, the country cannot be blamed for climate change, which appears to make droughts of this magnitude more frequent.
