Chelsea FAIL in their bid to Josko Gvardiol. with a rating of £75 million

Chelsea’s chances of signing a deal for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol are in tatters after the Croat signed a one-year contract extension on Thursday.

The Blues were in talks with the Bundesliga outfit about a fee of around £75million for Gvardiol, in a move the centre-back would have loaned out to Leipzig for the remainder of the season before arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2023.

However, Sports post sources indicated on Thursday morning that the idea eventually came too late for Leipzig to approve the departure of their star defender.

The German club has acted quickly to bind the highly regarded youngster to new conditions. He has signed a one-year contract extension, which will see him stay in Leipzig until 2027.

On Thursday he said: ‘I really enjoy being here and I wanted to stay here.

“We have a lot of work to do here and a lot to achieve. We have a good team and we are ready.

“We are in the Champions League and won the DFB-Pokal last season. We want to compete for the prizes again.

“I am grateful to the club for counting on me and planning with me for the long term.”

Gvardiol is only 20 years old but has already made a significant impact at Leipzig since joining the club last year.

In his first campaign in Germany, he played 46 games in all competitions, won the German Cup and helped his team to the last four of the Europa League.

His performances have meant that he has sparked interest from a number of top English clubs, with Manchester City and Tottenham also tracking his progress.

It looked like Chelsea were ahead of their rivals in the race for his signature, but now it looks like they will have to wait until at least January to try and lure him away from Leipzig.

Chelsea have already signed two centre-backs this summer after signing Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli before finally closing a deal for Wesley Fofana on Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel has also added Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwuemeka to his squad to bring Chelsea’s summer spending above £250m.

Despite missing out on Gvardiol, it could still be a busy last day out of the window at Stamford Bridge as the club look to get a deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over the line.
