Joey Barton sits among Marseille fans ahead of Champions League clash with Tottenham

Joey Barton was spotted giving Tottenham fans the middle finger as he stood among Marseille’s supporters on Wednesday night ahead of the French Champions League defeat in north London.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers midfielder enjoyed a brief spell for Ligue 1 during his playing career.

It seems the 40-year-old still has Marseille close to his heart, having been among the away supporters as Tottenham kick-started their Champions League campaign.

Barton, who now leads Bristol Rovers, had previously been photographed hours before kick-off having drinks with supporters.

He was then seen in the Tottenham stands, near the Marseille ultras, wearing a bright orange T-shirt that read ‘revolution orange’.

Barton was seen laughing and laughing with Marseille fans, even taking the time to snap a photo with some of those in attendance.

But at one point, things turned sour when Barton was pictured swearing at someone else in the stadium.

QPR sent Barton on loan to Marseille during the 2012-13 season, where he made 25 appearances.

The stint was perhaps best known for a bizarre interview he gave in English, where it appeared he had taken on a French tone for his Liverpudlian accent.

Barton would have been impressed with Marseille’s first-half performance, in which they seemed marginally the better side and were able to keep the deadly Tottenham attacker quiet.

But Richarlison’s reinforcements in the second half ensured Antonio Conte’s side got off to a winning start in Europe this season.

It is not the first time he has been at the end of Marseille when the French side visited the English capital.

Just months after his loan spell at the club ended, Barton sat with Marseille supporters for their trip to Arsenal in November 2013.

Arsenal beat Marseille 2-0 in their Champions League group stage match, although Barton managed to dig the atmosphere in the Emirates well.

“It’s so quiet here at Highbury tonight,” Barton tweeted at one point.

Barton continued after the first half but thanked the fans for their hospitality.

“Enjoyed the 1st half with the Marseille fans,” he tweeted. ‘Thank you @Winners1987 It was great to see you all. Thank you xx’
