Putin is ‘not convinced his nuclear weapons will work’

He said yesterday: “He could take into consideration that part of his arsenal might not work. We managed to kill so many rockets. I believe people around him, especially military experts, will tell him that it’s risky and they might not win. I think he makes the sound of sabers.”

Mr Prystaiko admitted that Kyiv was already doing “what we need to do” in preparation for a possible attack.

He said: “Gas masks are not enough – [there’s also] the special drugs, the infrastructure, the way we disperse people… “We are one of the few countries that know the nuclear effect.”

The ambassador said Ukraine was very grateful for its support and praised Britain for saying it would match or even exceed the £2.3bn it has given in military aid .

In a message to British families struggling with their energy bills, he said: “We’re not just trying to keep our children warm, we’re trying to keep them alive.”
