Alex Scott, 37, has revealed she has ‘fallen madly in love’ with former England and Arsenal team-mate Kelly Smith, 43. Alex, who usually keeps his personal life private, spoke candidly about their relationship and the heartbreak that followed, for the first time.
Excerpts can be found in his new memoir, How (Not) To Be Strong.
Speaking at the launch on Monday night, Alex explained that she wanted to reveal this part of her life because it would have been “cheating” to leave it out.
She also described Kelly, who is six years her senior, as her “first love” and said their relationship was a “big part of her life”.
She said, as reported The mirror: “I went back and forth to find out if I would actually write the chapter. But then it was one of those moments, I’m writing this book and I want to tell everything. I thought I’d cheat on you all if I didn’t put that in there.

“For me, it’s like that first love affair, I fell madly and deeply in love. And yes, there’s this heartache and these things, but it’s a big part of my life and I wouldn’t go back back and I wouldn’t change that.
“Because that feeling of love and that excitement and what it gives you, it had to be in there.”
Alex first joined the England national team in 2004, with Kelly making his debut nine years earlier.
The football stars both signed for Arsenal in 2005 after Alex played for Birmigham and Kelly returned from his stint in the United States.
During their time together they bought a house in Hertfordshire before moving to America to play for the Boston Breakers in 2009.
The pair would then return to the UK in 2012 after the US Women’s League was suspended.
They re-signed for Arsenal and represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics where the team finished fifth.
In 2016, Kelly married management consultant DeAnna Dobosz, with whom she shares two children.
Kelly has previously opened up about her drinking problems and admitted that she would “drink every day until [she] passed out” after suffering a leg injury in 2004.
She told The Independent in 2011 that she eventually sought help and spent a month at the Priory, then received treatment at the Sporting Chance Clinic.
Alex is currently single and recently revealed she’s ‘ready’ to love again after a string of ‘unhealthy’ relationships.
While reflecting on herself and her past romances, Alex told The Times, “I’ve been single for a while now, and I think it’s because I needed it.
“There were patterns in my relationships that I knew weren’t healthy.
“I understand myself better now. Before, I always had these walls up because I was trying to protect myself and the people around me.
“Now I’m ready to drop them all. I’m ready to be loved.”
