ISIS.. the absent present in the Turkish operation in northern Syria

Northern Syria- Although ISIS no longer has any geographical control over the land in Syria, the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces, which control large parts of northeastern Syria, are still finally threatening that any Turkish military action against it will undermine the war against the organization and allow it to return. to the Syrian scene.

And with Ankara again hinting at an upcoming ground attack on the areas controlled by the “Syrian Democratic Forces” in northern and eastern Syria, in a security reflection of the Istanbul bombing, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, announced on Wednesday the cessation of military operations against the “Islamic State” organization due to the Turkish attacks, stressing that coordination with the forces of The coalition regarding the fight against the organization has been suspended, due to preoccupation with possible confrontation fronts with Turkey.

Abdi’s statements do not seem new, as the military commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces spoke on several occasions about the negative results of any Turkish attack on the fight against the organization and the possibility of it taking advantage of the battles to return and reappear in several areas of Syria, especially the north-east.

Blackmail the West

The Syrian Democratic Forces are considered a strategic ally of the United States, the leader of the international coalition fighting the organization in Syria, as well as its military bases deployed in the areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, as the latter relies on this issue to prevent the attack by exerting American pressure on Turkey.

The Turkish researcher and analyst of foreign and security policy in Ankara, Omer Ozkizelcik, considered that the Syrian Democratic Forces have a real interest in fighting ISIS in Syria, but they also have a greater interest in keeping the organization alive.

Ozkielcik told Al-Jazeera Net that the main source of legitimacy of the Syrian Democratic Forces, its relationship with the West, and its international reputation is based on ISIS and its fight, in addition to its detention of hundreds of Western citizens as prisoners, which it uses to blackmail the West.

According to Ozkielcik, the wrong US policy in Syria contributed to the continued use of this pressure card until the moment, pointing out that the elimination of ISIS lies in the United States changing its policy and joining Turkey and the legitimate Syrian opposition, by returning the land to the Sunni Arabs and local tribes in Region.

alternative forces

And in the event that the Syrian Democratic Forces give up fighting against ISIS in Syria, the international parties will need alternative forces in the region, according to Kurdish political analyst Farid Saadoun, indicating that this alternative is not currently available.

Saadoun told Al-Jazeera Net that the Syrian Democratic Forces were established in an exceptional circumstance that required the emergence of a local force capable of controlling matters in northeastern Syria, and was able to prove its presence and prove its ability to fight terrorism first, and establish a local government that manages people’s affairs and imposes order second.

Saadoun believed that the Syrian Democratic Forces have a number of elements that make their survival a necessity for the stability of the region, “and in the event of its collapse, it will leave a vacuum that may be occupied by terrorist factions or forces supported by international parties that have contradictory interests, which will open the way wide for chaos, warfare, and the return of unrest.”

No declared war

More than 3 years ago, he announced the elimination of ISIS in Syria, after the forces of the International Coalition with the Syrian Democratic Forces pursued its last enclaves in Al-Baghouz in the countryside of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, so that the cells of the organization would later continue to carry out military attacks that did not stop until now against the targets of the regime. and the Syrian Democratic Forces in eastern Syria in particular.

In the field, the Syrian Democratic Forces do not engage in any military battles or actual war against the state organization in its areas of control, as the matter is limited to raids and security arrests that it carries out with the support of the coalition forces from time to time against those accused of belonging to the organization.

On the other hand, the current attacks of the organization’s cells take the form of raids and ambushes, to achieve human and military losses, far from geographical control, and the attacks are now confined to the desert and the areas adjacent to it in the governorates of Raqqa, Homs and Deir ez-Zor.

Analyst and Turkish researcher Ozkizelcik said that the Syrian Democratic Forces claim that they are carrying out many anti-terror operations, but they do not know the area, demographics, and people, which means that the operations they are carrying out target the wrong people, according to his belief.

However, the Kurdish political analyst, Farid Saadoun, indicated that the organization’s cells are still active in the region and carry out military operations against the forces on the ground, including repeated attacks on the Syrian army and the Iranian- and Russian-backed factions in the west of the Euphrates, stressing that what proves the danger of the organization is the attack it carried out. The beginning of the year on Al-Hasakah prison, which is a battle marked by planning and precise execution.

The means of the Syrian Democratic Forces

With reference to the repercussions of stopping the war that the Syrian Democratic Forces are talking about against ISIS, it seems that these forces have other means that they can resort to to confront the Turkish threat to storm their areas of control by land, related to political and military alliances with the countries of Russia and the United States, and the files of camps and prisons that are being held It contains elements of organization.

The Syrian researcher at Jusoor Center for Studies, Anas Shawakh, considered that one of the important means that the Syrian Democratic Forces may resort to is the issue of the thousands of detainees of the organization’s members and their families in the prisons and camps it runs in northeastern Syria, and its recent talk about the escape of a number of detainees from inside Al-Hol camp as a result of its exposure. bombed by Turkish aircraft.

Shawakh told Al-Jazeera Net that the sources proved that the bombing was several kilometers away from the camp and targeted areas unrelated to the camp. Fighting terrorism.

Like Al-Shawakh, the political analyst Saadoun believes that the Syrian Democratic Forces are still holding very important cards, the first of which is the prison card that houses thousands of ISIS fighters and their leaders, as well as the camps that house tens of thousands of ISIS families of various nationalities, and the second is the card of fighting the organization cells that It is still active in the region and carries out specific operations at times.
