Taiwanese rescuers freed dozens of residents of earthquake-damaged houses from the rubble. At least 9 people died, this information has not changed in recent hours.
According to the US Geological Survey, tremors were felt throughout Taiwan, and further tremors of magnitude 7 are expected in the coming days.
The worst hit by the earthquake was the Hualien region, with a population of about 300,000, of which about 100,000 live in the city of Hualien.
The Taiwan National Fire Service reported 71 miners trapped underground in the Hualien region.
