A rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck New York (United States) on Friday April 5, causing many neighborhoods in the megacity to shake slightly for a few seconds and notably interrupting a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza.

The epicenter of the earthquake has been located “7 km northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey”the neighboring state of New York, said the American Geophysical Institute. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km.

No significant damage or injuries were immediately reported, but some homes were evacuated in New Jersey. The slight tremor was felt in many neighborhoods in the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, causing a deluge of messages on social media platforms.
