UN court rejects Nicaragua’s claim against Germany aiding Israel

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

The International Court of Justice on Tuesday, April 30, rejected Nicaragua’s claim against Germany for alleged violation of the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide. How reports Reuters, a court in The Hague has ruled that Germany is not obliged to stop aid to Israel. We are talking, in particular, about arms supplies. At the same time, the court considered it possible to reject Germany’s request to terminate the trial.

Hearings on the lawsuit of Nicaragua against Germany were held on April 8-9. Nicaragua said that Germany, by helping Israel, violated its obligations to “prevent genocide” against the Palestinian people.” Thus, the German authorities allegedly contributed to the commission of genocide and other violations of international law.

The Nicaraguan side in court noted that this year Israel received weapons from Germany worth 326.5 million euros – about 10 times more than in all of 2022. This was reported in the news feed of the DPA agency.

Germany rejected Nicaragua’s accusations. The Commissioner for International Law at the German Foreign Ministry, Tanya von Uslar-Gleichen, said that such accusations have no legal or factual basis. According to her, Germany stands for Israel’s right to self-defense after the attack on it by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, and the security of Israel is a priority for Germany.

The media draw attention to the statements of the German side that Germany is taking measures to ensure the rights and protection of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
