Urgent.. The US Senate approves a ban on the import of enriched uranium from Russia

The US Senate unanimously approved on Tuesday a bill banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia.

Previously, this initiative was approved by the House of Representatives in Congress.

After Congressional approval will place the document in the hands of US President Joe Biden for his signature, and the White House has stated that it supports the draft law.

The law allows the ban to be abolished in the event that there are no other sources of uranium to support the operation of nuclear reactors.

The US Department of Energy, in consultation with the Secretaries of State and Treasury, may issue an import permit, and the ban will continue until the end of 2040.

Most of the uranium used in the United States to operate power plants is imported, and Russia accounts for about 12% of supplies. According to data from the Energy Information Administration of the US Department of Energy.
