Drugs allegedly mailed to Australian in Bali were gift in toothpaste tube: lawyer

Singapore/Indonesia: An Australian accountant allegedly caught with methamphetamine on the Indonesian resort island of Bali told his lawyers the drugs were sent to him as a “thank you gift” for buying a car.

Troy Smith, from South Australia, was on holiday with his wife in the popular tourist district of Legian when he was caught at the Champlung Mas hotel on April 30 with suspected 3.5 grams of methamphetamine.

The alleged crime carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

But while Indonesia’s tough stance on drugs can often lead to extreme punishments, including the death penalty, Smith’s alleged crime was relatively small-scale and his legal team hopes he will be sent to rehab instead of prison.
