Cringeworthy scenes as AFL legends try to roast Jonathan Brown over failed attempt to meet his idol Conor McGregor

Footy players love to roast their own, but an attempt by former AFL superstars to take the mickey out of Brisbane Lions legend Jonathan Brown has landed flat on its face.

Brown returned to Australia this week after a failed attempt to meet UFC superstar Conor McGregor ahead of his comeback fight against Michael Chandler on June 29.

It is a bout that has been in the works for 18 months, yet there is still lingering doubt on whether it will go ahead – as Brown found out the hard way.

The three-time Brisbane Lions champion was sent over to Dublin last week by Fox Sports to interview McGregor ahead of his comeback to the Octagon in Las Vegas and needless to say, the big fella was excited.

Brown had never been to Ireland before so he was hyped to have an exclusive chat with one of the world’s biggest sports stars.

It’s fair to say things didn’t go according to plan.

Cancelled flights and lost luggage were the issues getting to Dublin and then McGregor went AWOL, cancelling on Brown and then was a no-show at his press conference the next day.

‘The closest I got to him was pouring my own beers behind the tap with his title belt on my shoulder.’ Brown said.

So his former AFL rivals and Fox Sports colleagues Garry Lyon, Nathan Buckley and four-time premiership winning Hawk Jordan Lewis decided to stitch him up.

During the broadcast of the Brisbane Lions v Western Bulldogs clash, the panel ribbed Brown for his lack of success in locking down McGregor for an interview.

‘We sent the big man around the world and he was going to try and find his hero,’ Lyon said.

‘You went searching for him, but it didn’t come off.

‘I know you’re flat, so the three of us said let’s get the big fella up tonight.’

So the panel queued up the Lisa Stansfield hit All Around the World and started to sing in cringeworthy scenes.

‘I’ve been around the world and I, I, I, I can’t find my baby,’ they crooned.

Brown did his best to hide his embarrassment, but footy fans didn’t hold back.

‘Am I glad I missed that live, cringeworthy stuff boys,’ one posted.

‘Who thought this would be funny? Cringe,’ another said.

‘One of the tougher watches you’ll see this year,’ added another.

Meanwhile the Brisbane Lions have injected life into their inconsistent AFL campaign by registering an emphatic 43-point win against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium

Returning to the venue of their disappointing defeat to Hawthorn before the bye, the Lions battered the Bulldogs in the middle to set the tone for the 17.12 (114) to 10.11 (71) victory on Friday night.

“It was a good response and was probably as good as we’ve played this year,” Lions coach Chris Fagan said.
