At the Summer Olympic Games taking place in Paris, Russian tennis players Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schneider, who competed in doubles, conquered silver medals.
In the final of the 4th August, they lost to the Italians Jasmina Paolini and Sara Errani. The Russians won the first set with a score of 6:2, and lost the second 1:6. According to the Olympic rules, a tie-break is played in pairs instead of the third set. The Italians were stronger in it – 10:7.
Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schneider’s silver medal was the first at the Olympics for neutral athletes with Russian citizenship, and 17-year-old Andreeva became the youngest Olympic tennis medalist since 1992, when American Jennifer Capriati won gold in singles at the age of 16.
- Russia has been officially banned from international sports tournaments for an indefinite period due to its invasion of Ukraine. Russians are allowed to participate in some competitions as neutrals and under a neutral flag, while others are not allowed at all. Fifteen athletes from Russia were invited to the Paris Games in this status. Twelve of them have already completed their performances.
