UN calls for immediate aid for Sudan after famine confirmed in North Darfur

A tally prepared by the “Coordination of Displaced Persons” (independent) revealed the death of between 20 and 25 people in refugee camps in Darfur (western Sudan) due to food shortages, while the United Nations officially declared famine in the “Zamzam” camp, which houses more than half a million people, on Friday.

The Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, commented after the emergence of famine in North Darfur, saying: “These results reflect the seriousness of the humanitarian situation on the ground.”

She called for the provision of urgent resources and unhindered humanitarian access by the parties to the conflict, adding: “If this does not happen, we will witness a more catastrophic situation.”
