Bangladesh protests: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigns

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the government palace in Dhaka on Monday, August 5, according to a source close to the leader, before thousands of anti-government protesters stormed it, according to television footage. Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman later announced that the head of government, who has been challenged on the streets for a month, had resigned and that he would “form an interim government”.

Anti-government protesters had called for a large rally in the capital and a heavy security presence was deployed, with the army and police blocking access to the streets leading to the prime minister’s office. To restore order, while the country of 170 million inhabitants is in the grip of a protest movementstudents who denounce the favors that those close to the government benefit from to become civil servants, The government has cut off internet access, closed schools and universities, imposed a curfew and deployed the army.

According to a tally made Monday, August 4 by AFP based on data from police, officials and doctors in hospitals, the clashes between opponents of Sheikh Hasina and supporters of the government have left at least 300 dead since the start of the movement a month ago. On Sunday, 94 people were killed in new clashes across the country, including at least 14 police officers, according to the police spokesman. This is the heaviest toll in a single day.
