Blinken stresses to Burhan the necessity of the army’s participation in the ceasefire talks in Switzerland
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed the need for the Sudanese army to participate in the ceasefire talks in Switzerland.
The US Secretary of State said – during a phone call this evening with Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Commander of the Sudanese Army and Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, according to a statement issued by the US State Department – that the destruction and devastation in Sudan since April 2023 prove that holding national ceasefire talks is the only way to end the conflict and prevent the spread of famine, as well as restore the civilian political process.
The US Secretary of State stressed the need to end the fighting urgently and enable unhindered humanitarian access, including across borders and across lines, in order to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
